Kansas’ big men come up big

SAN ANTONIO | For all the pregame talk of how Monday’s title game would be determined solely on the perimeter, the battle underneath was just as key.

And it all seemed to start and end with KU’s Darrell Arthur, who posted a team-high 20 points and 10 rebounds in Kansas’ 75-68 overtime win.

Arthur dominated Memphis’ post players in the first half with 10 points and four rebounds, made a huge fadeaway jumper with a minute to go in regulation, then helped the Jayhawks pull away with two big plays early in overtime.

“Kansas has very good players inside,” said Memphis coach John Calipari, rubbing his forehead. “They seemed to be able to go inside whenever they needed to.”

But Arthur believed he nearly cost his team the game in the final seconds of regulation. With KU trailing 62-60, Memphis guard Chris Douglas-Roberts missed two free throws, but Memphis forward Robert Dozier snared the rebound off the second miss.

“That was my fault,” Arthur said. “I missed the blockout there, and I thought we were done.”

But after another foul, Memphis’ Derrick Rose made only one of two free throws, setting up Mario Chalmers’ dramatic three-point, game-tying shot.

Once in overtime, Arthur slammed home a dunk that put KU up 67-63.

Moments later, Arthur fed teammate Darnell Jackson inside with a terrific pass for an easy layup that gave KU a 69-63 lead with 2:38 left. That was too much for Memphis.

“We didn’t have Dorsey in overtime,” Calipari said. “That hurt.”

Dorsey, Memphis’ bruising, 6-foot-9, 265-pound forward, fouled out with 1:23 left in regulation. He finished with just six points and two rebounds.

“We just kept a body on him at all times on defense,” Arthur said. “And we went after him on offense.”

Jackson added, “I think we definitely frustrated him. He kept crying to the ref.”

Arthur delivered a huge 8-foot fadeaway jumper that energized the crowd and pulled Kansas within 62-60 with a minute to go in regulation.
