Kansas’ defense is better putting on the blitz

LAWRENCE | Nothing gets Kansas’ “bash brothers,” linebackers Joe Mortensen and Mike Rivera, excited like a call for them to blitz.

“It’s all about want,” Mortensen said. “When Coach calls your number to blitz, you gotta get there and act like there’s no one in coverage.”

Mortensen says he would blitz every play if he could, and it appears he just might have to this season for the Jayhawks to get pressure on the opposing quarterback. In the first half last week against KU, Iowa State quarterback Austen Arnaud seemed to have all day to pick out his receivers. In the second half, KU turned up the heat with its blitz packages, sacking Arnaud twice.

On the surface, it seems the Jayhawks are a much more effective defense when they are aggressive in blitzing. Should they blitz more as the year goes on?

“I think it’s a team-by-team basis in terms of that,” KU defensive end John Larson said. “I don’t think that our blitz rate should go up, but I’m not the defensive coordinator.”

The Jayhawks have 11 sacks, sophomore defensive end Jake Laptad leading the way with 3½. Larson believes the Jayhawks’ defensive line is capable of getting pressure without the help of blitzing.

“We’re getting pressure,” Larson said, “and not just that but the presence around the quarterback, letting him feel us and making sure he doesn’t have all day to pass the ball.”

Colorado quarterback Cody Hawkins is more likely to stay in the pocket than Arnaud or South Florida’s Matt Grothe earlier this year. Certainly, more blitzing today would make for a happy group of linebackers.

Other story lines

WILL JAKE SHARP FOLLOW UP HIS IOWA STATE PERFORMANCE? Sharp broke out for 186 total yards and two touchdowns last week. Does he have back-to-back big games in him?

WILL KU’S SPECIAL TEAMS RESPOND? The Jayhawks couldn’t have had a worse game in special teams against Iowa State. A long kickoff return by Marcus Herford, who is averaging 12.8 yards per return, would be a start.

WILL KERRY MEIER MAKE IT FOUR? Meier set a KU record with his third straight 100-yard receiving game last week. He leads the Jayhawks with 44 catches for 514 yards.
