AMES, Iowa | If the Kansas Jayhawks aren’t careful, they just might lose all of the respect they gained in 2007. Through one half, No. 16 KU trailed Iowa State 20-0. But three third-quarter touchdowns later, KU was leading 21-20.
In the first half, Iowa State quarterback Austen Arnaud picked apart KU’s secondary for 126 yards and a touchdown, completing 15 of 19 passes. And the Jayhawks tried and failed yet again to establish a ground game. Of course, it didn’t help that KU turned the ball over three times – once on a Jocques Crawford fumble, once on a Todd Reesing interception and once on a Daymond Patterson muff of a punt.
Frankly, after all of that, the Jayhawks were lucky to be within three scores. KU went three-and-out on its first three drives.
Meanwhile, Iowa State had pristine field position and moved the ball at will. The Cyclones scored on a 16-yard Alexander Robinson run and an 8-yard pass from Arnaud to Marquis Hamilton and led 14-0 with 3 minutes, 56 seconds left in the first quarter.
The Jayhawks were outgained 181-93.
