Planning for New Year's? Here are a few ideas from FYI columnist Jeneè Osterheldt:

Seventh Annual Omega Ball at the Sheraton Hotel, 6100 College Blvd. in Overland Park. Party for a cause. Money raised from this event will benefit college-bound high school seniors. There will be champagne, a buffet and two floors of live entertainment. Two live jazz bands (TC Dixon and the KC All Stars Jazz Band on level one and the James Ward Band on level two) will perform at 7 p.m., and two DJs (Myron D and C Styles) will spin at 9 p.m. If you want to stay at the hotel, the Omega rate is $106, with extended checkout at 4 p.m. For tickets, $80, call 913-262-7837.

Chickenhoof and the Hearts of Darkness at Davey’s Uptown Ramblers Club, 3402 Main St. If you haven’t heard Hearts of Darkness, a 16-piece Afrobeat band, your soul is missing out. They play until the lights come on. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. You can get them at Davey’s, 816-753-1909, or www.ticketmaster.com.

The Year of Sin Celebration at Seven, Seventh and Walnut streets. The lounge, known for its deadly seven sins martinis, is hosting a hot party with DJ Twiggy, women painted as sins and more. New Year’s Eve Extravaganza at Martini Corner, 31st and Oak streets. Five parties in one — you can’t beat that. Admission is $75 and includes a drink package (house wine, domestic beer and wells) and access to Mint Ultra Lounge, Velvet Dog, Sol Cantina, the Drop and Tower Tavern. Mosaic Dress to Impress New Year’s Eve in the Power & Light District, 1331 Walnut St. Mosaic is easily one of the hottest spots in the P&L. So if you want to party in the district, why not there? The VIP cocktail reception costs $60 a person or $100 a couple. There’s hors d’oeuvres and an open bar from 7 to 9:30 p.m. There will also be four bands and a laser light show at KC Live! General admission is $30 in advance or $40 at the door. Table packages start at $125. For reservations, call 816-645-9976.
