Blue Valley North freshman keeps eye on the ball

During his run to the 6A state singles title, it’s safe to say that Blue Valley North freshman Jack Sock won over his fair share of admirers.

And once you look at his accomplishments, it’s easy to see why. Sock, The Star’s All-Metro boys tennis player of the year, entered high school competition as the eighth-ranked junior player in America and lived up to the billing.

He joined the Mustangs in mid-April, fresh off a victory in the prestigious Easter Bowl (a national tournament that attracted several of the best players in his age group), and promptly rolled to the East Kansas League singles title, a regional title and ultimately, the state title.

He finished with a record of 17-0, and beat each of the second-through-fifth place finishers at the 6A state tournament at least once along the way.

“Jack had his eye on that (state title),” Blue Valley North coach Fernando Zuna said. “He was relentless.”

    And impressive.

“He’s the best ninth-grader I’ve ever seen,” Shawnee Mission East coach Sue Chipman. “Jack has the whole package. He is consistent. He doesn’t have any holes in his game.”

Sock’s closest match at state came in the quarterfinals against Olathe Northwest senior J.T. Christian, a former 6A state champion who will be playing tennis at Marquette in the fall.

Christian, who lost to Sock 6-2, 6-2 and went on to take fifth, says Sock has the potential to be as good as he wants to be.

“He’s already a great player, but someday — if he can stay healthy and stick with it — he can be something special,” Christian said. “He has more natural talent than anyone else.”
