Football excitement builds at Blue Springs
More News
Championship week has returned to the Blue Springs football team, and with it comes the media obligations, ticket requests and a host of other headaches thrown at Wildcats coach Kelly Donohoe.
But Donohoe doesn’t mind the headaches. In fact, he welcomes them, simply because they come with the territory of being the envy of other schools in the state. Overall, only 14 teams in Missouri, including the 8-man participants, have earned the privilege of playing in the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis this weekend.
“The week is a very unusual week, but it’s really an exciting week,” Donohoe said. “I wish we could have it every year. We’re still on cloud nine. When you get to this point, as coaches, everyone seems to be in a great mood.”
And why not? Blue Springs should be excited to meet Hazelwood Central at 7:30 p.m. Friday for the Class 6 state championship. As Blue Springs (12-1) prepares this week (the Wildcats have taken a trip to the Chiefs’ indoor practice facility to get an idea of how it will be like to play under a roof) Donohoe knows the biggest headache of all will be Hazelwood Central, the defending state champion.
“Early in the week it’s always hectic because there’s so much logistical stuff you’re dealing with,” Donohoe said. “When your mind really wants to stay on Hazelwood Central.”
Hazelwood Central is in Florissant in suburban St. Louis, only 21 miles from downtown St. Louis and the Dome. With that in mind, Donohoe believes “it’s kind of a home game,” for Hazelwood Central. However, Blue Springs should travel well and cover St. Louis in purple and gold. On the team’s web site, the football booster club is promoting a spirit bus for fans who want to see Blue Springs possibly bring home a fourth state title.
