Bruster carries load for Raytown South

More News

Darrien Bruster had been waiting all season to test how fast he could run in a game. Monday night against Ozark, Bruster, a Raytown South receiver, took advantage of his opportunities in open space and scored twice.

Bruster’s touchdowns were not only important in the Cardinals’ 35-13 win against the Ozark Tigers in a Missouri Class 5 sectional, but they also came when Raytown South needed them most.

When the Cardinals needed a response to Ozark scores, Buster was there to make sure Raytown South’s season didn’t end. After each of the Tigers’ two touchdowns in the second quarter, Buster gave the Cardinals the momentum back with touchdowns.

Bruster’s first touchdown was a 62-yard reception off a quick pass. Once he made one defender miss, Bruster ran past every other Tiger into the end zone.

“When the game is on the line,” said Bruster, who had four receptions for 162 yards, “I’m going for the end zone on every play.”

When the game was in doubt, Bruster found the end zone again, this time on special teams. After coach David Allie saw the Tigers weren’t going to kick the football deep, Allie asked Bruster to play one of the blockers’ positions.

Once the Tigers squib-kicked the football downfield, the ball bounced right into Bruster’s hands. He made one cut and returned the kickoff 74 yards.

“Darrien is a special kid,” Allie said. “We brought him in for that play, and he knew he could have a chance to take it to the end zone.”

Raytown South, 8-3, will travel to play Nixa this Saturday in the quarterfinals.

Bruster, who sat out most of last year because of a knee injury, knows winning this playoff game makes Raytown South a contender to go back to St. Louis for the state championship game two years in a row.

“We can be unstoppable if we keep playing like this,” Bruster said. “We could be state champions.”

After he scored his second touchdown, Bruster looked up at the home crowd. He smiled and shook his head — almost as if to say he knew the Tigers, 5-5, couldn’t handle him.

Bruster’s teammate, quarterback Dennis Tanner, hopes Bruster can continue to make plays.

“He’s hard to get down and he has speed,” Tanner said. “Anytime the ball is in his hands, I expect big things to happen.”
