Raymore-Peculiar coach Tom Kruse moved cornerback Marc Harrison to the offensive backfield the third week of the season because he thought Harrison could deliver a spark at times.
“And he consistently has done that for us down the stretch,” Kruse said.
The Panthers didn’t necessarily need a spark when they took possession to start the third quarter Monday in Missouri Class 5 sectional play against visiting Winnetonka. But, well, they got one anyway.
Harrison, a 6-foot, 190-pound senior, rushed for 133 of his game-high 169 yards in the first 9 minutes of the second half and all but sealed a 42-14 win for Ray-Pec. The Panthers will play host to undefeated Fort Osage on Saturday in the Class 5 quarterfinals.
“We just needed a spark lit, and we just wanted to put it out of reach,” Harrison said.
That they did.
The Panthers, 8-3, scored on each of their three possessions in the first half and took a 20-7 lead that quickly swelled after halftime.
On Ray-Pec’s opening drive of the second half, Harrison rushed for 64 yards in three carries, scoring on a 35-yard run.
Two Panther possessions later, Harrison’s 69-yard run to the 2 set up a short touchdown run by senior Martin Booze.
And less than 2 minutes later, junior Deron Washington returned a punt 77 yards for Ray-Pec’s final score, putting the Panthers ahead 42-7 late in the third quarter.
Harrison and junior quarterback Cameron Coffman, who got the offensive going with touchdown runs of 10 and 28 yards in the first quarter, each scored two touchdowns for Ray-Pec.
Senior Darrell Jobe led Winnetonka, 8-4, with 113 rushing yards and one touchdown in 20 carries.
He had 104 of those yards before halftime — before spraining his knee in the second quarter and before the Griffins’ deficit dictated more passes — and carried the ball only five times in the second half.
