in Missouri sectional football playoffs
1Kearney (9-2) at Staley (11-0)
The best new rivalry in the city returns tonight. Last season in this Class 4 sectional playoff round, Kearney crushed Staley, but earlier this year, the Falcons returned the favor with a 21-7 win over the Bulldogs. Both teams can expect another evenly matched, low-scoring game. Stingy on defense, Staley has only allowed 13 points over the past four weeks. In that same span, Kearney, led by Joe Windsor and Stephen Juergens, has surrendered just 14 points.
2Grain Valley (9-2) at Harrisonville (10-1)
Just 10 days ago, these teams met to determine the Class 4 District 13 championship, and Harrisonville soundly defeated Grain Valley 37-12. So what has changed since that Oct. 30 game? The Eagles hope to throw in new wrinkles but already recognize that they can drive on Harrisonville since they racked up 358 yards during that last matchup. However, finishing those drives against the Wildcats’ defense will be another challenge.
3Winnetonka (8-3) at Raymore-Peculiar (7-3)
Raymore-Peculiar enjoyed a first-round playoff bye while Winnetonka laid into Park Hill South 56-38. If the Panther coaches scouted that game, then they would have seen a better balanced Griffin offense. Although senior Darrell Jobe, who has more than 2,100 rushing yards this season, scored five touchdowns, the Griffins also featured an early passing threat. During Ray-Pec’s current five-game winning streak, the Panthers also have played with balance, establishing a running game even without a true No. 1 rusher to complement quarterback Cameron Coffman.
4Carrollton (10-1) vs. Hogan Prep (10-1) at William Chrisman
Last season in the Class 2 sectionals, Carrollton barely edged Hogan Prep 14-12. It was the Rams’ second straight year of losing in the sectionals after their run to the 2006 state championship game. To avoid another playoff letdown, Hogan Prep looks to keep its fair-weather offense on track. In wins, Hogan Prep has averaged 38 points but in the only loss this season — much like last year’s defeat against Carrollton — the Rams struggled to find the end zone.
5Ozark (5-4) at Raytown South (8-3)
There may not be a more determined player on the Raytown South roster than senior Darrien Bruster. The wide receiver missed the entire 2008 Cardinals season, which ended in the Class 5 state championship game, due to an ankle injury he suffered a year earlier in his sophomore season. But this season, Bruster has added more firepower to Raytown South’s warehouse of athletes. Last week against Lee’s Summit West, Bruster scored two touchdowns.
