Olathe East survives fourth-quarter scoring bonanza

More News

With its streak of seven consecutive postseason berths on the line, Olathe East rolled past Blue Valley North 49-35 on Friday in Kansas 6A District 2 action.

The Hawks, 5-3, controlled the game on the ground, grinding out 362 yards in 47 carries on the way to the runaway win. But credit the Mustangs for making it interesting with a furious four-touchdown fourth quarter at the College Boulevard Activity Center.

“We’ve got backs that are really explosive, and Carter McEntee has been throwing the ball real well,” Hawks coach Jeff Meyers said.

“Our offense is just really clicking with the running game and passing game. We’ve just got to bring our pass defense along.”

BV North, 3-5, briefly drew within a single score when junior quarterback Danny Dolan threw his fourth touchdown pass — a 15-yard strike to senior Clay Richardson with 1 minute and 50 seconds remaining after recovering an onside kick.

BV North drew first blood thanks to a dose of trickery on back-to-back plays.

Facing fourth and 7 near midfield, the Mustangs sneaked backup QB Grant Adams in at punter and surprised the Hawks with a 13-yard pass to junior Montana Sharp for a first down.

“We should have expected something like that, because we’ve seen running backs passes on film, but we weren’t ready for it there,” said senior Hayden Groves, who rushed for 166 yards and scored three TDs.

The next play, starting quarterback Danny Dolan connected with senior Sean McLarren on a 41-yard flea-flicker touchdown deep over the middle.

“Coach gave us a good talking to, and after that we came out and dominated,” Groves said.

But the rest of the half belonged to East, which answered with a 12-play, 59-yard drive. Brandon Willingham tied the game with a 2-yard TD run.

The Hawks took the lead on the next possession when senior quarterback Carter McEntee dumped a middle screen to senior Hayden Groves, who weaved his way for a 19-yard TD.

East’s lead ballooned again on its first drive in the second half.

The defense forced a BV North three-and-out, and three plays after that Willingham rumbled 43 yards, cutting back after scooting past the first wave of defense then outrunning eight Mustangs to the corner of the end zone.

Groves added a 12-yard TD run in the waning seconds of the third quarter as the Hawks built a 28-7 lead.

The real fireworks didn’t start until a 49-point fourth quarter.

Both teams are now 1-1 in district play, but the Hawks get SM South next while BV North ends the regular season with a must-win game against BV Northwest.
