Olathe East senior golfer Allison Forristal said it has been a rough season — by her standards, that is. And in that regard, Monday had the makings of a rough round.
She finished the front nine at Ironhorse Golf Club with a string of 3-putts and made the turn at 5 over par during Kansas 6A regional play.
But the back nine was a different story. Forristal steadied herself, finished with a 5-over 77 and won the regional championship on the first hole of a playoff with Blue Valley West junior Morgan Cross.
“That’s the type of person she is,” Olathe East coach Kathy Lilley said. “She’s never a quitter.”
Now, Forristal will try to put a similarly strong finish on her varsity career next Monday in the 6A state tournament at Dodge City Country Club.
Blue Valley North won the team championship Monday with a 331, while BV West and BV Northwest also qualified for state.
Senior Erin Terry led BV North with a 79 and placed fourth, freshman Natalie Curran was seventh with an 83, and sophomore Stephanie Curran was ninth with an 84.
Cross led BV West with her runner-up finish, while junior Carly Jones (sixth at 82) and freshman Ashton Munholland (10th at 84) also scored in the top 10 for the Jaguars.
Junior Katie Morel led BV Northwest with an 81 for fifth.
Olathe East didn’t qualify as a team, but Forristal will be joined at state by two teammates. Hawks freshman Jordan Chael (who took third with a 79 after a playoff with Terry) and senior Katelyn Nigus also qualified as individuals, along with Olathe Northwest’s Cassie Wang and Kendra Wright.
5A: Misenhelter wins
St. Thomas Aquinas senior Gianna Misenhelter took an uncharacteristic triple bogey on her first hole of 5A regional competition. But the rest of her round — and the final result — were no surprise for her.
Misenhelter, a two-time state champion, picked up 3 strokes on the back nine and finished with an even-par 72 at Crestwood Country Club in Pittsburg, winning her fourth regional title.
Aquinas, the defending 5A state champ, won the regional title by a commanding margin with a 314 team score. Senior Alexa Osbourn was the regional runner-up for the Saints with a 77, junior teammate Ali Kruse placed third with a 79, and all six Aquinas golfers finished in the top eight.
Bishop Miege and Gardner Edgerton also qualified for the 5A state tournament next Monday at Brookridge Country Club in Overland Park. Junior Bailey Hopper led Miege with an 83 and finished fourth.
