Olathe East freshman Jordan Chael won the battle, taking gold Monday at the Shawnee Mission South Invitational.
But Shawnee Mission East freshman Anne Willman won the war, edging Chael for first in the two-round Sunflower League girls golf championship in addition to leading the Lancers to a team title.
The league championship combined the scores from Monday’s round at Overland Park Golf Club with those from the Free State Invitational on Sept. 14 at Lawrence Country Club.
Willman’s two-round total of 152 was 1 stroke better than Chael. Willman tied for the day’s low round at 73, but Chael was awarded the gold after a scorecard tiebreak.
“I knew I had the ability to win, but the key was just to hit fairways and hit greens and just make a lot of pars,” Willman said.
SM East, which started the round with a 14-stroke lead, shot a 309 and added 31 more shots to its margin over runner-up Olathe East, which won the 2008 title.
