This year’s Kansas 6A state track and field meet couldn’t have gone much better for Olathe East junior Breeana Coleman.

Coleman, The Star’s All-Metro girls track athlete of the year, captured the 100-meter dash in 12.03 seconds, the 200 meters in 24.93 seconds and the 100 hurdles in 14.30 seconds.

She also ran the anchor leg on the Hawks’ second-place 400 relay team and led Olathe East to its second consecutive team state title.

The effort capped a remarkable season for Coleman, who also swept all three individual events at the Sunflower League and Kansas 6A regional meets.

But Coleman had to earn it.

She ran all four events on the final day of the meet, enduring temperatures in the mid-90s.

Coleman’s effort was not lost on Olathe East coach Mike Wallace.

“At least the hurdles and the 100 were in the morning so (the heat) wasn’t too horrible,” Wallace said.

Her dominating performance at the state meet becomes more impressive when you consider that she had never won a gold medal at state in previous years.

After the state meet, Coleman admitted that she was happy with her performance but also said she would like to have set personal records in the events.

Wallace, however, was quick to point out that he couldn’t have been happier with her accomplishments.

“She ended up with three gold medals, so I’d say that’s a pretty good day,” Wallace said.
