Zane Tanner to take over Kearney boys basketball program

After 17 years leading the West Platte boys basketball program, Zane Tanner said Friday he has accepted an offer to become the new Kearney Bulldogs head coach.

"Sad to leave West Platte — going to really miss everyone," Tanner announced on his Twitter account. "But excited to start a new experience leading the Kearney boys basketball program."

Tanner replaces Gary Belcher, who departed earlier this month for the head coaching job at St. Joseph Benton.

Parra leaving Sumner Academy for Park Hill South

After 15 years at Sumner Academy High School, boys basketball coach Dan Parra has decided to leave for Park Hill South.

Parra, who is already a resident of the Park Hill South community, has yet to be approved by the board, which will meet on April 24.

“They are very active in their school, their fan base is great and their facilities are second to none,” Parra said. “I think they have some of the best facilities in the state of Missouri. Education-wise, I think it is at the top of school districts in the state of Missouri. Those are all things that drew me to move my family there and now to be the basketball coach and teach there.”

Liberty North, Blue Springs South, Lee's Summit West, Rockhurst ranked in latest state baseball poll

Before it had even taken the field for the 2014 season, the Liberty North baseball team received its first ever ranking from the Missouri High School Baseball Coaches Association poll.

It's been a steady climb ever since.

Liberty North is No. 3 in the latest Missouri Class 5 poll, the highest billing for any Kansas City team. The Eagles are 12-1.

Missouri roster announced for GKCFCA football all-star game

The Missouri roster was released today for the 23rd annual Greater Kansas City Football Coaches Association Kansas vs. Missouri All-Star Game. The contest is scheduled for 7 p.m. on June 19 at Blue Springs High School.

Smithville head coach Greg Smith will lead the Missouri all-stars, who are seeking their fourth straight victory in the series. His coaching staff for the game will include Grain Valley coach David Allie, Excelsior Springs coach Josh Buford, Richmond coach Jeremy Helton, Pembroke Hill coach Sam Knopik, Kearney assistant Dan Luellen and Smithville assistants Darren Shaffer and Josh Speer.

The Kansas roster was announced Monday.

Kansas roster released for GKCFCA football all-star game

The Greater Kansas City Football Coaches Association released the Kansas roster for the 23rd annual Kansas vs. Missouri All-Star Game. The game will take place on June 19 at 7 p.m. at Blue Springs High School and the Missouri roster will be released on Tuesday.

The Kansas team will be led by Baldwin coach Mike Berg. Baldwin assistants Jay King and Brian Turk, Shawnee Mission South head coach Ryan Lonergan, Shawnee Mission South assistant coach Brad Qualls, Ottawa head coach Rob Hedrick, De Soto assistant coach Mark Gastelum and Olathe Northwest assistant coach Greg Thomas will serve as assistant coaches.

Lee’s Summit West, Kearney, Liberty, Liberty North among schools set to move to new football classfications

Change is coming to the Missouri high school football and basketball postseasons.

The Missouri State High School Activities Association released its district and classification assignments for the two sports, which will cover the next two school years.

As expected, Lee's Summit West will make the leap to Missouri Class 6 football. The Titans won the Class 5 state championship last fall. Their jump to Class 6 will force a reshuffling of the four football districts in the class.

Kansas Tennis Coaches Association releases rankings

For the third straight week, the Shawnee Mission East boys tennis team is ranked first Class 6A in the Kansas Tennis Coaches Association poll. Blue Valley Northwest, Blue Valley North and Olathe Northwest joined Shawnee Mission East in the top five.

Two other metro-area schools are also in the polls with St. Thomas Aquinas ranked third in Class 5A and Kansas City Christian ranked second in Class 3-2-1A.
