On the Big Screen: 'Made of Honor'

A typical chick flick? Not so much, with Patrick Dempsey starring as Tom, a man who realizes he's in love with his best friend a little too late.

He is ready to profess his true love for her, but she gets engaged and makes Tom her "maid of honor." Tom's guy friends help him to come up with a plot to get her back, leading to some beautiful scenery of Scotland.

Over the last few years, movies have been trying to turn around typical chick-flick situations and show them from the male perspective. This movie is no different, though unlike some of those recent films, it succeeds in that both women and men can enjoy the movie.

It has witty humor and does not insult the audiences's intelligence. Not all of the actors in the film show personality, such as Michelle Monaghan, who stars as the best friend, Hannah.

But with people like "Tiny Shorts Guy" played by a character actor (Kevin Sussman) and "McDreamy," aka Dempsey, the movie is saved and entertaining.

Yes, the movie does follow a formula and no, it won't win an Academy Award, but it is fun and comedic, which is a success for a movie by itself.

Lindsay Grossman is a student at Bella Vista High School in Sacramento, Calif.
