Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson (left) talked with Gary Beets, regional director of the Kansas City Financial Center, about the process of printed and mailing economic stimulus checks.
Economic stimulus checks printed in Kansas City will be in the mail tomorrow, Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson said during a visit to a Treasury printing center here.
National production of the checks began Friday at Kansas City’s Financial Management Service Regional center, which is one of four such centers from which an estimated 88 million stimulus checks ranging from about $300 to $1,200 or more will be mailed between now and the end of July. Nearly 44 million similar payments also are being directly deposited in recipients’ bank accounts this month as well.
Paulson, in town to watch the first checks come off high speed printing and sorting lines, estimated that nearly $100 billion of the payments will be in consumers’ hands by early July.
The secretary also said he expected benefits to the national economy, including the creation of 500,000 new jobs, should start showing up later this summer.
Until then, however, as consumers struggle to cope with rising prices for fuel, food and health care, “we’re facing some pretty strong headwinds,” he said at a brief news conference.
“We’re very focused on getting this to work,” Paulson said of the stimulus program.
He estimated that workers in the Kansas City regional center will print and ship about 2.5 million checks weekly through the end of May, then boost that production to 3.75 million checks weekly in June and July, after the Internal Revenue Service wraps up filing season work. Other checks will be printed at similar regional centers in Austin, Philadelphia and San Francisco.
