When Jay and Sue Bristow found that Independence had grown too close five years ago, they found a newer home with acreage providing the space and privacy they had been missing.
“We were farther east in Independence and had lived in our previous home for 30 years,” Jay Bristow said. “It was in the country when we moved there and we have often joked that we had to move farther into the city to get back into the country.”
Now that home, a three-bedroom true ranch with a full brick exterior, is too large for the couple, he said. Carolyn Carey, an agent with Century 21 All-Pro, will host an open house at the home, 400 N. Home Ave., today.
“It’s an older area, but this is a newer home on a little more than four acres,” Bristow said. “It’s like your own little corner of the world here.”
The property is surrounded by a park on the south and heavy woods on the west and north.
“It’s like a park within the city,” Carey said. “It’s right by Interstate 435 but it’s very private.”
The property is fenced and horses are allowed, Carey said.
The maintenance-free exterior and the true ranch floor plan with acreage were the first things that attracted the Bristows’ attention, he said. While the home doesn’t have an extraordinary number of rooms, it’s the size of the rooms that is impressive, Carey and Bristow agreed. In addition to the three bedrooms, there are 3 1/2 bathrooms. The living room has a full-wall native stone fireplace. A large laundry/utility room is on the main level.
The backyard is in bloom with fruit trees, and a sunroom on the back of the home takes advantage of the view.
The finished daylight basement includes a family room with a second full-wall brick fireplace and den. There is also a large storage area.
An attached, side-entry garage provides space for two vehicles and mowing equipment.
“We just love this house, it’s just that for two people it’s a little large,” Bristow said.
Bristow said he and his wife have enjoyed working again with Carolyn Carey.
“We used to be next-door neighbors back in the early ’70s and we’ve continued our friendship with her and her husband ever since,” he said. “She’s always working hard for us. She sold my mother’s home, our daughter’s home, our son’s home and then sold us this one.”
