As winter looms, think of the needy

More News

Those extra coats and blankets in good condition can get a new home Saturday, during the annual Project Warmth drive to benefit people in need.

This year, 14 locations metrowide will accept blankets, coats and financial donations from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Volunteers will receive the goods and help load them onto well-marked trucks. Go to projectwarmthkc.com to find a site nearest you.

Donations are especially needed because of the high unemployment caused by the worst recession since the Great Depression. The Salvation Army will distribute items to agencies and shelters. Coats and blankets will go to needy families, the elderly and children. Cash donations will go to the Mid America Assistance Coalition and the Salvation Army to help those struggling to pay utility bills and rent.

Kansas City Star editorial cartoonist Lee Judge is offering original cartoons for $50 donations to Project Warmth. Watch for ads in The Star for the cartoon request form.

Project Warmth began in 1982 during a recession, a joint effort by The Star and KCTV-5. It has continued each year to benefit thousands who need assistance.

Cable-Dahmer Chevrolet of Kansas City-Noland Road is donating a car to help spur donations for Project Warmth. All donors of $50 or more will be registered to win the Chevrolet Malibu made at the Fairfax plant in Kansas City, Kan.

KCTV-5 will hold a telethon on Dec. 11. Postage-paid envelopes for donations will be in The Star on Dec. 13.

The forecast couldn’t be better for Saturday’s drop-off effort. Take advantage of the expected sunshine by adding some special warmth to those who face a challenging winter.
