Remember to vote in local elections

More News

Two essential law enforcement taxes are on the short list of local ballot issues today.

Jackson County voters will decide whether to renew a quarter-cent sales tax for the Community Backed Anti-Drug Tax (COMBAT) for seven more years.

In Clay County, voters will determine whether to extend an eighth-cent sales tax for 12 more years.

Make your voice count: Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Here are The Star’s recommendations on selected issues:

JACKSON COUNTY

Question: Shall the county continue its countywide, quarter-cent sales tax for seven years for the purpose of the arrest, prosecution, incarceration, treatment and prevention (including D.A.R.E. programs) of drug-related offenses and violent crimes? — YES

Independence School District

Question: Shall the Independence School District issue general obligation bonds worth $85 million to build two elementary schools and to renovate and improve existing school buildings, resulting in an estimated increase of 15 cents per $100 in assessed valuation of real and personal property? — YES

CLAY COUNTY

Question: Shall Clay County extend its countywide, eighth-cent sales tax for 12 years to provide law enforcement services that would include maintenance of current facilities and to provide for the incarceration of inmates? — YES

Liberty

Question: Shall the city repeal its smoke-free law and enact a new law that would prohibit smoking in more public places, including all bars and restaurants? — YES
