New books mark museum opening


READINGS
No fewer than four new books mark the opening of the Bloch Building and highlight the work of architect Steven Holl.

STONE & FEATHER: Steven Holl Architects/The Nelson-Atkins Museum Expansion (Nelson-Atkins/Prestel; $35). Includes an essay by Jeffrey Kipnis, professor of architecture at Ohio State University, plus a foreword by Marc Wilson, sketches and writings by Steven Holl, an essay by project architect Chris McVoy and photographs by Roland Halbe.

BOLD EXPANSION: The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art Bloch Building (Nelson-Atkins/Scala; $9.95 paperback). A souvenir guide to the remade museum.

HOUSE: Black Swan Theory, by Steven Holl (Princeton Architectural Press; $40). A survey of 15 residential projects revealing Holl’s ideas about specificity, light, change and other aspects of architecture.

ARCHITECTURE SPOKEN, by Steven Holl (Rizzolli; $75). A collection of Holl’s speeches and other writings packaged with a survey of Holl’s career, including sections on the Nelson-Atkins and other recent projects.
