    VOICES 05/02/08

This is to Alta Stephens of Independence (4/28, Voices): Hillary is the one who cannot win. She would unite the Republican Party like no one else can. Republicans are in a flurry because Hillary is the one they wanted to run against. Obama got more delegates in Texas than Hillary. Obama can win, and he will win.

Everybody in Kansas City knows Carl Peterson should go. I’ve got to relate a statement made by one of my friends at work in regard to Jared Allen. That statement was, “He’s just one night on the town away from oblivion.” I hope he does well in Minnesota, and I wish we could have kept him.

I’m calling in regard to a picture (4/28, Local, “The rhythm energizes … sometimes”) showing some Kansas students who participated in a music and cultural camp. It seems to me that a different picture could have been chosen rather than the one showing the students yawning, stretching and looking tired. As a retired teacher, I am especially offended by that choice. Why highlight something that doesn’t portray the value of the event? Our schools and students get enough negative attention as it is.

Is it any wonder that young men in this day and age have a hard time determining young girls’ ages? Miley Cyrus being dressed up to appear as a much older woman is the latest example of how our young girls are treated in this day and age.

I find the hubbub about Miley Cyrus’ photos a little humorous because I wonder how many of those moms who are complaining about those pictures are still letting their teenage and preteen daughters watch Jamie Lynn Spears on TV while she was getting ready to have a baby at age 16?
