An issue of public safety
From The Toronto Star
Conservative MP Candice Hoeppner of Manitoba wants to abolish the long-gun registry.
Under her bill, not only would future registration of rifles and shotguns cease but also files on 7 million previously registered guns would be destroyed.
This notwithstanding the fact that the nation’s police forces find the registry a useful tool in fighting crime.
The politicization of this issue is unfortunate. As Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair says, the gun registry is really an issue of public safety, and “public safety is everybody’s issue.”
