2008 travel photo contest: A field of winners

LARRY WOLFE, OVERLAND PARK | FIRST PLACE, HEARTLAND This abandoned pickup caught Larry Wolfe’s eye on a trip to visit relatives in McCook, Neb. “I drove into town and noticed it in the field,” Wolfe says. The judges applauded the crisp detail and nice lighting. STEVE TANQUARY, OLATHE | FIRST PLACE, U.S.A. Decisions, decisions, decisions.

Our judges had their hands full selecting the top winners for this year’s vacation photo contest because the quality of the entries was so good.

“The top five images in each category were all very striking,” said Mary Schulte, features photo editor for The Star and one of the judges. “We had numerous discussions about who would be 1, 2 and 3.”

In particular, this year’s photographers seemed to take great care with lighting.

More than 1,500 entries were submitted in the categories of Heartland, U.S.A. and World, with the competition especially stiff in the U.S.A. category.

Congratulations go to Larry Wolfe of Overland Park, Steve Tanquary of Olathe and Linda Hanley of Oak Grove in Jackson County as the top winners. They will each receive $150 and an enlargement of their winning entry. Runners-up will receive movie gift cards.

Thanks to everyone who entered.
