•Mel Gibson became a father for the eighth time on Friday when his girlfriend, Oksana Grigorieva, gave birth to a baby girl at an undisclosed hospital in Los Angeles.
Gibson, 53, was there for the birth but flew Sunday to New York to resume shooting “The Beaver,” co-starring Jodie Foster. Cast members sang “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow” to him on Monday, “and he blushed,” a crew member told People magazine.
•It’s a boy for Mary Stuart Masterson, 43, and husband Jeremy Davidson. The actress had her baby on Oct. 11. This is the first child for the couple, who married in 2006.
Jay would go back to late night, if asked
In an interview with Broadcasting & Cable magazine, Jay Leno says he would have preferred to stay at “The Tonight Show,” and would go back — if NBC asked him.
But that’s not his decision to make, says Leno, who was replaced in the late-night spot after 17 years by Conan O’Brien.
“Conan is in the same position I was in when I took over. It takes awhile. Some will like it; some will leave forever and not come back,” Leno says.
His new primetime show began on NBC in September and its ratings have been, well, not so hot.
“I get a certain amount of satisfaction from pounding my head against the wall,” Leno says. “I’m not having a bad time at 10 o’clock now. I look at this as a job, and now I’m faced with a challenge, and it’s a challenge I find difficult but interesting.”
That’s one way to look at it.
Elton still recuperating
Elton John has been hospitalized with a case of E. coli bacterial infection and the flu, his spokesman said Monday.
Gary Farrow says Elton has been forced to cancel concerts in England, Ireland and the United States. Elton’s Web site says he was advised by his doctor to postpone dates in Seattle and Portland.
The Daily Mail quotes Elton’s partner, David Furnish saying “He’s OK — he’s fine.”
He plans to rejoin the “Face2Face” tour later in the month when he and Billy Joel play concerts in northern California.
Here’s hoping he’s well by then — the two have a Dec. 1 stop scheduled for Kansas City’s Sprint Center.
A ‘Precious’ premiere
The cast and crew of “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire” enjoyed a star-studded gala premiere Sunday at the legendary Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood.
“I’m speechless,” said director Lee Daniels at the event hosted by the American Film Institute. “I’m humbled and speechless. That’s the best way to describe it. I just can’t... I wish I had the words. Dreamlike? Sort of surreal.”
The movie, which opens Friday, follows Clareece “Precious” Jones, an overweight, abused Harlem teen, pregnant with her second child, who is invited to attend an alternative school.
Gabourey “Gabby” Sidibe, who makes her film debut in the title role, sort of remembered meeting co-executive producer Oprah Winfrey.
“Unfortunately, I forgot everything about it,” Sidibe said. “It’s so weird, because she’s such a big deal to me, that when she speaks, I don’t hear anything. It’s like it’s so weird. It’s like hysterical blindness in a way. All I can remember is her saying my name over and over, and that can’t be right.”
The movie has already attracted strong critical acclaim for two cast members: singer MariahCarey and comedian Mo’Nique.
Mo’Nique plays Clareece’s monstrous, abusive mother. Carey, who plays a social worker, called “Precious” a milestone compared to her 2001 bomb, “Glitter.”
“I mean I had one milestone that almost had me under the stone,” she joked.
When Lisa Gutierrez isn’t wishing she had tickets to that Elton John-Billy Joel concert at the Sprint Center, she’s Stargazing among somewhat accurate accounts of celebrity news.
