Updated: 2014-02-27T19:12:13Z

A Shawnee man pleaded no contest Wednesday to charges stemming from a 2012 traffic crash that killed a 20-year-old woman.

Brian James Reed, 55, entered the plea in Johnson County District Court to a charge of vehicular homicide in the October 2012 death of Alyssa Whitaker in Merriam.

Reed also pleaded no contest to a charge of battery for injuries to another motorist.

Under terms of the plea agreement, Reed was placed on probation for 18 months. He will have to spend two weekends in jail and serve a 90-day sentence of house arrest. He will also be required to perform 100 hours of community service.

If Reed fails to complete the terms of probation, he faces a jail sentence of 18 months.
