The Stack BBQ went dark recently with little notice.

Now new owners plan to reopen it in April as The Stack BarBQ.

“We had been eating there for years,” said Jeff Hallier, a partner with Dan Mason in the new barbecue. “Our family considers it an institution and we hated to see it close. We were looking for an opportunity like this so we are stepping up to keep it open.”

Smokestack BBQ had previously operated in the space at 8920 Wornall Road. After it closed, one of its longtime employees partnered with a best friend from childhood who had worked at Smokestack during the summers.

Together they opened The Stack BBQ in early 2012. They built a loyal following since then, and some of those customers are still showing up, disappointed to find the barbecue closed.

It’s been hard for the new Stack owners to turn those customers away. But first they have to remodel the restaurant, including putting in new floors and raising the ceiling for a scheduled April 1 opening.

They’ll keep the Stack menu and may add some new items, including unique appetizers and barbecue offerings.
