Locking up an 84-year-old nun for three years for breaking into a nuclear weapons complex in Oak Ridge, Tenn., is like authorities taking Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny on a perp walk in front of a preschool.

Sister Megan Rice broke into the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak on July 28, 2012, with two other people. Federal District Judge Amul Thapar sentenced Greg Boertje-Obed and Michael Walli each to 62 months in prison, The Christian Science Monitor reports.
Rice received 35 months in prison. The protesters spray-painted biblical phrases inside the complex and poured human blood on the wall of the facility.
Peace activists worldwide including Kansas City have been engaged in similar protests against nuclear weapons plants and other facilities. The prison sentences against Rice and the others seem severe. Hopefully this isnt the start of a new get-tough trend.
