Ikea on Wednesday named Rob Parsons as manager of its Merriam store, which is scheduled to open this fall.

Parsons, who will oversee about 300 employees, has been with the Swedish home furnishings retailer since he was hired as a part-time worker in 1992.

In 2008, he was named operations manager of Ikea’s Long Island, N.Y., store and most recently had been acting store manager there.

“Rob’s store management experience and background preparing new stores to open more than qualify him to manage” Ikea’s Merriam store, the company said in a statement.

The 359,000-square-foot store is under construction on the east side of Interstate 35 at Johnson Drive. It will be the first Ikea store in Kansas and Missouri, although the company recently announced plans to open a store in St. Louis in fall 2015.
