Jackson County authorities have accused a 28-year-old man of fatally shooting another man last September inside an Independence residence.

Nicholas L. Cannon of Independence was charged Monday with second-degree murder and armed criminal action in the slaying of 35-year-old Justin A. Sneegas of Shawnee.

According to court records, police found Sneegas, mortally wounded, inside a bedroom of a residence in the 1300 block of South Sterling Avenue early Sept. 15. A female at the residence dialed 911 and told a dispatcher that victim had been shot.

Cannon told investigators he went to a residence and found his girlfriend in bed with Sneegas, according to court records. Cannon said he saw Sneegas reach for an object and move towards him. Cannon also said he feared for the safety of his 4-year-old daughter, who had accompanied him to the home, and he admitted firing several shots at the victim, court records said.

Cannon then left the residence but later turned himself in to police. The girl was found unharmed.
