Kansas City police are investigating after a 5-year-old boy suffered second-degree burns to his back and bruising and swelling to his leg.

The boy’s mother called 911 about 10 p.m. Tuesday, three hours after the boy was burned, reportedly in a bathtub in their apartment in the 1300 block of Independence Avenue.

The 20-year-old mother told police she went outside to check the mail about 7 p.m. She said she returned about 7:30 p.m. and found her 23-year-old boyfriend holding the child. She noticed severe burns to the boy’s lower back and buttocks, which she cleaned before putting him in bed.

When the boy awoke later in pain, she noticed the burns had become worse and she called for an ambulance. She told police she didn’t know how the child suffered the bruises to his leg.

Doctors told police that the burns did not appear consistent with the story they were given and that the burns would have required the child be in contact with hot water for a longer time than doctors were told.

It was unclear who turned on the hot water in the tub, police said. Detectives were investigating.
