MoDot says employers should let workers stay home Tuesday

Updated: 2014-02-03T20:43:11Z

Employers, please tell your workers to stay home from work Tuesday.

That’s what the Missouri Department of Transportation urged Monday in light of a weather forecast predicting up to 10 inches of snow to fall in the Kansas City area.

As of Monday afternoon, the expectation was that Tuesday’s snowstorm would be much like the storm of Feb. 21, 2013. It didn’t seem too bad at first, but by the time it began falling with force in mid-morning, workers heading home in their vehicles ended up clogging highways and roadways.

“MoDot urges employers to consider having their employees work at home or not come in at all,” said department spokesman Stephen Porter. “This is a safety issue for the public and an issue of efficiency for us.”

Porter said that last year some motorists were stuck with their vehicles for as long as eight hours. Some parts of the Kansas City area last year recorded about a foot of snowfall. Many people came to work that day viewing the initial snowfall as light.

But by mid-morning, highways were littered with the vehicles of motorists failing to get home. Cars and trucks were left abandoned on streets and roadways.

“The timing and intensity of the snow may seem to be easy to deal with in the first few hours and people may think it’s not going to be so bad,” Porter said of Tuesday’s expected snow.

But, he added, don’t count on it.
