Interstate 70 from Kansas City to St. Louis in Missouri was both beautiful and horrific over the weekend.

Ice and snow that fell on Saturday coated trees and fields, making scenery along the highway sparkle like a well-polished jewel. However, the roads were treacherous.

The shoulders and median contained quite a few cars and trucks that had slid off the interstate when the road was slick. By Sunday, road crews had cleaned the pavement and were picking up the pieces from abandoned vehicles.

Guard cables in the median on I-70 helped prevent what could have been quite a few crossover accidents. The vehicles that remained hung up on the cables on Sunday provided ample evidence that the road safety system works.

That’s good because more snow, and a heavier accumulation, is forecast for Tuesday in Missouri.
