The new Aldi store at 39th Street and Prospect Avenue will be a welcomed addition in the black community.

That area used to have a full-service grocery store, but it left about 30 years ago. A grocery store had gone in nearby at the Linwood Shopping Center, but it closed a few years ago.

People in the black community have had to travel quite a distance just to get goods to prepare food at home. The Aldi store helps end in that part of Kansas City what first lady Michelle Obama calls a food desert.

As more people return to the urban core, more stores should follow.
