An Overland Park police officer was injured while working a traffic accident on Interstate 435 when his patrol car was struck by another vehicle, police said.

The officer was taken to an area hospital but his injuries were not thought to be life-threatening.

Police spokesman Gary Mason said the officer was working a two-vehicle accident that occurred about 7:30 p.m. on westbound I-435 just before Metcalf Avenue. The officer was in his vehicle when it was struck from behind about 8:10 p.m. by another vehicle that may have slid on the ice. The accidents blocked the three left lanes of the highway until past 10 p.m.

It was the second injury to an Overland Park officer Friday. Another officer slipped on ice and fell while working a traffic accident about 4:45 p.m. at 127th Street and Nieman Road. His injuries were minor.
