A Blue Springs man is facing multiple charges in connection with a rolling disturbance Thursday afternoon in Independence.

Prosecutors on Friday charged Joshua Blake Hardin, 23, with second-degree assault, second-degree domestic assault, resisting arrest and other charges.

Authorities first learned of the disturbance just after 2 p.m. Thursday when a driver called 911 while heading north on Missouri 291. She told dispatchers that a white Dodge Intrepid had nealy collided with her car. The caller said she could see the Intrepid’s driver repeatedly striking a female passenger with his fist.

At one point, when the caller’s car pulled up alongside the Intrepid, the woman in the passenger seat said, “Help me.”

The caller stayed on the phone while following the Intrepid onto westbound Interstate 70. She later told authorities she saw the driver strike the woman more than 100 times.

The woman tried but failed to exit the Intrepid when it pulled into the parking lot of a fast-food restaurant near the intersection of I-70 and Noland Road. The driver then accelerated, fleeing east on East 42nd Street and driving at a high rate of speed, sometimes narrowly avoiding collision with other cars.

The Intrepid crashed into a Jeep Grand Cherokee on Little Blue Parkway.

The Jeep’s driver was taken to Centerpoint Medical Center. According to court documents, he was placed on a ventilator in the hospital’s intensive care unit, suffering from multiple fractures and internal injuries.

Hardin also faces one count of possession of a controlled substance after a nurse at Centerpoint, while removing Hardin’s clothes, noted a small bag containing a crystalline substance. That substance later tested positive for methamphetamine.

Prosecutors also charged Hardin with driving with a revoked license.
