Assault reported in vehicle prior to injury wreck in Independence

Updated: 2014-01-31T04:44:52Z

Three people went to the hospital Thursday afternoon after a brief police chase ended in a two-vehicle accident at 39th Street and Little Blue Parkway in Independence.

About 2 p.m., according to Independence police, a motorist called 911 and reported that the driver of another vehicle was repeatedly striking a female passenger while heading north on Interstate 470 from Lee’s Summit. Other motorists saw the assault continue as the vehicle went west on Interstate 70. One caller told dispatchers that the female tried unsuccessfully to get out of the vehicle as it traveled on the interstate.

An Independence officer tried to pull the vehicle over after it exited onto Noland Road, police said. The driver slowed and the woman tried again to leave the vehicle, but the vehicle sped off and the pursuit began. Police said the pursuing officer could see the driver hitting the female.

The vehicle wound up on 39th Street and continued east until the collision at Little Blue Parkway.

Police said the female passenger was seriously injured and the driver was treated for minor injuries and released into police custody. The driver of the car that was hit also was seriously injured.
