A 51-year-old woman was killed Sunday night after she was struck by a vehicle on Interstate 29 while she tried to retrieve items that had blown out of the bed of her pickup truck.

Kansas City police on Monday identified the woman as Robin C. Lindsey of Kansas City. The wreck occurred about 6:15 p.m., in a period of gusty winds, near Mexico City Avenue.

Lindsey was driving north when a strap holding down several large items in her truck’s bed apparently failed, police Sgt. Bill Mahoney said. Several items, including a wheelbarrow, toppled into the roadway.

She pulled the truck over on the right shoulder, as did several other drivers whose vehicles struck the items. Lindsey walked south and crossed into the inside lane to look for the items.

She was in the traffic lane about 200 feet south of where she pulled over when a northbound pickup truck struck her. The driver stopped immediately and called police. Lindsey died at the scene.

Police found the wheelbarrow south of where Lindsey was struck.
