Belton officers assaulted

Two Belton police officers were assaulted Sunday while checking out a report about a person in a vacant residence.

Police were dispatched to the residence in the 700 block of Second Street at about 4:20 p.m. Sunday, according to a news release from the Belton Police Department. An officer approached the suspect, who immediately began assaulting the officer. A second officer who soon arrived also was assaulted by the person. More officers were summoned and took the person into custody.

The officers who were assaulted were treated at a hospital and released. Police said the suspect is being held pending further investigation and possible charges.
