The shooting was reported about 3:25 a.m. outside the club, Retro, in the 1500 block of McGee Street.
The victim had shown up at the club with some friends, but it was closing time so the group could not get inside, said homicide Sgt. Barb Eckert. The group encountered another group in the parking lot, they argued and a man from that group pulled a pistol and shot the victim.
The victim’s friends drove him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Few witnesses stayed at the scene to talk to police. Anyone with information about the shooting should call the Tips Hotline at 816-474-TIPS(8477.)
The killing marked the second homicide outside Retro.
In May 2012, someone fatally shot Marcus Heilderberg, 23, about 1:20 a.m.
The incident began inside the club when a man demanded an apology from one of Heilderberg's relatives, police said. Unaware he had done anything wrong and thinking the man may have been talking to someone else, the relative did not apologize, police said.
The perceived refusal to apologize led to a fight that spawned several other disturbances inside the club. Employees turned on the lights, shut the bar early and ordered everyone to leave.
Outside, fights started up again. Police think Heilderberg's brother was fighting with someone when Heilderberg tried to separate them and Heilderberg was shot.
Heilderberg was not fighting and was not doing anything wrong, police said. The killing remains unsolved.
