A 53-year-old woman interrupted a burglar who broke into her south Kansas City house Tuesday night.

The victim awoke when she heard a loud bang about 11:35 p.m. in her home in the 6300 block of East 101st Street. A few minutes later, she heard someone walking in her upstairs hallway. She also smelled a lit cigarette from behind her closed bedroom door.

She walked up to her closed door, pressed her face close and called out to her son to see if he was making the noise.

A man’s voice answered, “Yeah,” but it wasn’t her son’s voice.

She then heard footsteps scurry down the staircase. She left her bedroom to investigate and saw her garage door open. She called police.

Officers saw a man in a neighbor’s backyard, but he fled.

Officers found a television near the bottom of a staircase, where the burglar had apparently moved it.
