Jeffrey E. Wahl faces two counts each of first-degree assault and armed criminal action in connection with the incident in the 300 block of West Farmer Avenue, which is a block north of Truman Road. Police arrested Wahl after a brief standoff.
Both victims, a husband and wife in their 60s, were in critical condition Tuesday at a hospital, said Tom Gentry, police spokesman.
According to court records, Wahl went to the home of Carl and Pamela Bryant just before 6:30 a.m. and rang the doorbell. Carl Bryant answered the door while armed with a handgun.
Wahl allegedly attacked him and tried to take the gun. The struggled continued outside. Pamela Bryant tried to help her husband, but Wahl got the gun and shot both, according to court records.
Wahl fled to his residence, where police arrested him.
Wahl later told investigators he went to the Bryants’ house to confront Carl Bryant about vehicles that have handicapped parking stickers on them. Wahl also said he did not intend to shoot Pamela Bryant but she may have gotten between them during the altercation. He tossed the handgun into landscaping in front of the victims’ house, court records stated.
On Monday, police had issued Wahl gunman three municipal citations for incidents involving another neighbor. Wahl was accused of throwing a can of beer at that neighbor, poking holes in the neighbor’s vehicle tires and stealing a box, Gentry said.
Wahl is listed as a registered sex offender for indecent exposure for a 1992 conviction involving two girls, ages 10 and 11, that occurred in Los Angeles, according to the Missouri Highway Patrol.
