Again, readers gave.

And because of that, hundreds of kids in the Kansas City area will have packs of food to take home every Friday during the school year.

About 580 readers donated money to the fourth KC Challenge, a virtual food drive where all proceeds go to the BackSnack program. The weekend food provides kids with two breakfasts, two other meals and snacks to tide them over until school on Monday.

This season’s challenge raised $101,140. That will provide 404 elementary students weekly BackSnacks for the full year.

The Kansas City Star and Harvesters have partnered since 2010 on the drive in an effort to educate the community on childhood hunger and make an impact on families who often don’t have enough food. The partnership has raised a total of more than $827,000.

As part of the KC Challenge, Harvesters hosts three Star Sundays in December where readers can volunteer to pack food for the program. This year, 564 Star readers, staffers and community members volunteered 1,128 hours of serving on those three Sundays.

Readers could make their donations in a loved one’s name. The dedications were published in The Star’s Christmas edition. Go to KansasCity.com to see the updated list of dedications.
