Interactive graphic: The 2013 Chiefs scoring, by the numbers

Updated: 2014-01-03T17:10:32Z

At first blush, the numbers seem simple enough: The Chiefs outscored their opponents this season by a cumulative 430 points to 305.

But a closer look at the statistics the Chiefs, 11-5, compiled along the way, including during their 9-0 start to the season and ups and downs that followed, tells a more complete story.

And it’s not as simple as “they beat bad teams and lost to good ones,” though that does emerge as at least part of the Chiefs’ 2013 narrative.

The real story of how this team reached the playoffs, along with determination, hard work and yes, some lucky breaks, can be deciphered with a close inspection of the Chiefs game-by-game stats.

While you watch the clock tick down to Saturday’s 3:35 p.m. kickoff at Indianapolis, have a look at the attached graphic and see if you can spot some trends.
