When St. James Academy volleyball coach Nancy Dorsey first started getting congratulatory texts about her coach of the year honor, she assumed it was just lingering interest from her Kansas Class 5A appointment.

It wasn’t until someone emailed her a link to a story from USA Today that she realized she’d been selected the 2013 American Family Insurance All-USA Volleyball Coach of the Year.

“It was very humbling and very exciting,” Dorsey said. “I still haven’t processed it entirely.”

In her eighth year at the helm, Dorsey led the Thunder to a sixth consecutive state title and a 46-0 record. The Thunder has finished in the national top five four times — including this season, when it was ranked No. 1 by PrepVolleyball.com — and have a 215-10 record in the last five years.

“Since I’ve been at St. James it’s been such an amazing ride and it’s taken such a short time to create a really special environment that I am very proud of,” Dorsey said.

Dorsey was joined by sophomore middle blocker Audriana Fitzmorris, who made second-team All-America.
