A fatal disagreement over a handgun led Saturday to murder charges against a 19-year-old Kansas City man in the slaying of Marcel Buchanan earlier this month.

Chan O. Brown faces charges of second-degree murder and armed criminal action, a spokesman for the Jackson County prosecutor’s office reported.

A witness told detectives that on Dec. 18 he was seated in the front passenger seat of a black Toyota sedan parked in the 6200 block of South Benton Street, according to court records. Buchanan, 25, was in the driver’s seat, the witness said, and waiting to meet someone to trade Glock handguns.

A man, later identified as Brown, took a seat behind Buchanan in the back seat, the witness said. Both men dropped the magazines out of their Glocks before the exchange.

“Once the trade had been completed, the suspect produced another Glock handgun, pointed it at the victim and the witness and informed them that he was going to rob them,” a police statement said.

During a struggle over the gun, the witness heard a single gunshot. As he ran from the car, he heard two more shots.

Court records said the witness identified Brown as the shooter from a photo lineup. Police already had recovered Brown’s cellphone from the car, the records said.

Police arrested Brown on Dec. 26. He denied any knowledge of the homicide, the victim or even being in the area, court records said.

But in a follow-up interview with detectives the next day, Brown acknowledged meeting Buchanan in the car to exchange guns. Brown said, however, that when he presented his own Glock for trade, Buchanan grabbed for the weapon and a struggle ensued. The Glock discharged and the bullet struck Buchanan, Brown said, according to court records.

Brown admitted firing two more shots after the witness fled because he believed Buchanan was still grabbing for the Glock, court records said.
