Royals sign Jason Donald, Melky Mesa to minor-league deals

The Royals signed two players to minor-league contracts on Saturday.

Added for the 2014 season were infielder Jason Donald, who spent 2013 in the Cincinnati Reds organization, and outfielder Melky Mesa, who played in five games with the New York Yankees.

The right-handed-hitting Donald, 29, played in 78 games for the Reds’ Class AAA Louisville affiliate. He batted .219 with 15 doubles, two triples, two homers and 23 runs scored.

Donald has also spent time in the Cleveland Indians organization, appearing in a career-high 88 games in 2010. He’s a career .257 hitter with 27 doubles, five triples, seven homers and 43 RBI at the major-league level.

Mesa, who also bats right-handed, was five-for-13 (.385) with two doubles and two runs scored for the Yankees last season, and hit .261 in 84 games for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (Class AAA), with 15 doubles, 13 homers, 39 RBI and 13 steals in 15 attempts.
