Strong finish for Moustakas in Venezuela

Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas finished strong in the Venezuelan winter league.

Moustakas, who played in 17 games for Cardenales de Lara, batted .288, with three home runs, six doubles and 17 RBIs. He had an on-base percentage of .360 and a slugging percentage of .515.

In his last five games, Moustakas hit .412 with four doubles, two walks and two strikeouts.

Here are how other players in the Royals organization are doing in Venezuela:

Salvador Perez is hitting .295/.326/.394 with one home run and 17 RBIs in 30 games (132 at-bats) for Tiburones de La Guaira.

Outfielder Gorkys Hernandez, who played at Class AAA Omaha last season, is hitting .281 with three home runs, four triples, 15 doubles and 30 RBIs in 55 games for Caribes de Anzoategui.

Outfielder Paulo Orlando, who also was at Omaha, has a slash line of .272/.335/.395 for Cardenales de Lara. In 45 games, he has three homers, 16 RBIs, 12 walks and 36 strikeouts.

Right-hander Sugar Ray Marimon is 0-1 with a 4.35 ERA in five games with Cardenales de Lara. Marimon, who was at Class AA Northwest Arkansas last season, made three starts. He has allowed 13 runs (five earned) on 18 hits in 10 1/3 innings with five walks and six strikeouts. He hasn’t pitched since Dec. 12.


Second baseman Christian Colon, who was at Omaha a year ago, batted .284/.326/.386 for Leones de Ponce. He has struck out 12 times and walked five times. According to, Colon was only supposed to play in November and Colon’s last game was on Nov. 30.

Shortstop Jack Lopez, who played last season at Class A Wilmington, has a slash line of .270/.317/.417 for Cangrejeros de Santurce in Puerto Rico. He has six doubles, a triple, three home runs and 12 RBIs in 115 at-bats.


Left-hander Francisley Bueno, who was at Omaha and with the Royals a year ago, is 0-1 with a 2.25ERA in five starts for Tigres del Licey. In 20 innings, Bueno has allowed 26 hits, six runs (five earned) with five walks and 12 strikeouts.

Right-hander Maikel Cleto, who spent last season at Class AAA Omaha, has appeared in six games for Tigres del Licey and allowed two runs (one earned) in 9 2/3 innings. He has yielded two hits with two walks and 13 strikeouts.

Infielder Pedro Ciriaco, a September call-up to the Royals, is hitting .292/.311/.365 with five doubles, a triple and 14 RBIs in 25 games with Leones del Escogido.

Catcher Francisco Peña, acquired in the offseason, is hitting .242/.272/.404 at Aguilas Cibaenas. He has three home runs, seven doubles, 12 RBIs, 15 strikeouts and four walks in 37 games.


Right-hander Spencer Patton, who pitched for Class A Wilmington and Class AA Northwest Arkansas, has 10 saves and an 0.72 ERA in 20 appearances for Caneros de los Mochis. He has 32 strikeouts and six walks in 25 innings.


First baseman Jared Schlehuber is hitting .296/.352/.459 with the Melbourne Aces. He has four home runs and 18 RBIs in 27 games.
