Overland Park authorities warned Tuesday that someone was calling city residents and pretending to be from the police department, probably as part of a financial scam.
Police said the caller is using computer software to show the police department’s number on caller IDs.
“This is obviously a scam in order to solicit money from residents,” police spokesman Gary Mason said in a written statement. “The scam may claim that a grandchild or family member has been arrested and in need of bail money, or something similar.”
Mason said that anyone who speaks with someone posing as an officer and demanding money should call police.
