Stellar spellers: Fifth-grader Alex Kroenke won the championship at the schools spelling bee. Anne Thomas, an eighth-grader, placed second and Joe Graves, a seventh-grader earned third place.
Fifteen students in fifth through eighth grades competed as part of the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
The academy, a private Christian school in Kansas City, North, educates kindergartners through eighth-graders.
Honor society induction: Northland students were among new members selected for Alpha Sigma Lambda, a national honorary for adult learners pursuing undergraduate degrees, including night and weekend students.
From the Northland, they are Michael Desautels from Holt; Ryan Ellis and Laura McFadden from Liberty; and Lori Reynolds from Kansas City, North.
To qualify for the honor society, students must be seniors with at least a 3.75 grade-point average who have completed 24 or more semester hours at Park University.
Liberty School District
Patriotic winners: Austin VanBlack, a senior at Liberty High School, won the Voice of Democracy contest sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars with an audio essay. The theme was Why I Am Optimistic about Our Nations Future.
James Hirsch, an eighth-grader at Discovery Middle School, won the Patriots Pen contest.
The winners now advance to district-level competition.
Park Hill School District
Educators certified: Three teachers earned certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.
They are Pamela Carver at Prairie Point Elementary School, Jessica Morgan at Southeast Elementary School and Megan Palmer at Park Hill South High School.
To become certified, the teachers submitted a series of portfolios showing effective teaching strategies and communication and collaboration with parents. They also passed a written exam.
