COLUMBIA, Mo. — Columbia police say no charges will be filed against a truck driver who hit and killed a bicyclist on Interstate 70 but drove away because he thought he had hit a deer.
The truck driver, David Thompson of St. Peters, called authorities in October to report he had hit a deer near Columbia. Police did not find the body of 36-year-old Ennis Patrick for nearly eight hours.
The Columbia Daily Tribune reports the police investigation concluded officers who first responded to the report followed department policy even though they didn't determine the remains were those of a human. The report says two officers who drove by the scene and saw evidence that looked like a deer had been hit.
Callers later alerted police to the human remains.
